Apr 5, 2012 -
U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today announced that two Columbia County students received appointments to America’s Service Academies. John Russell Hintze received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and Calvin Navarre Owens received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Both are seniors at Grovetown High School.
“Attending one of the America’s Service Academies is a tremendous achievement reserved for our nation’s brightest students,” said Broun. “I wish both young men well in their future endeavors, and I am confident that John will make a fine midshipman and Calvin an exceptional cadet.”
John, son of Douglas and Katrina Hintze, is following in his father’s footsteps. Mr. Hintze is a member of the class of 1983 for the U.S. Naval Academy and is currently a captain in the Naval Reserves. John participates in Varsity Track and Cross Country. He is Student Council Treasurer, Vice President of the school’s National Spanish Honors Society, and volunteers throughout the community.
Calvin is the son of Calvin and Sandra Owens, both of whom were military officers. Calvin is a member of his school band and the National Spanish Honors Society. He also was a Spanish tutor and chosen to sit on the Student School Accreditation Committee.
On Thursday, April 12th, Broun will hold a joint signing ceremony for both students at 2:00 p.m. in the media center at Grovetown High School. Each year, Congressman Broun is privileged to nominate eligible students for consideration for appointment to the United States Air Force, Naval, Military, and Merchant Marine Academies.
