House Committee Rejects Consideration of Broun Amendment to Uphold Press’ First Amendment Rights
Washington,
Jul 14, 2010 -
The House Committee on Natural Resources today rejected an amendment offered by U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) that would uphold First Amendment rights for members of the press covering the Gulf Coast oil spill. Several news outlets have reported that the federal government is blocking media access to coastal areas on the Gulf – prohibiting photos and filming of the environmental damage. Broun’s amendment would ensure free and open access of the media to the oil spill clean-up activity occurring on public lands on public shorelines.
