Stimulus Sends Two Million Dollars to Nonexistent Georgia District 00

U.S. Congressman Paul C. Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today questioned the validity of the White House’s claim that the so-called “stimulus” has created or saved hundreds of thousands of jobs. As several news outlets are now reporting, far too many of the numbers are based on poor accounting and awards for nonexistent congressional districts.
“In May, I warned that in addition to broken transparency promises, the Obama Administration is offering ‘progress’ reports that are nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Half a year later, this Administration has proven that it can spend, spend, spend,” said Congressman Broun. “But when it comes to managing the spending and improving transparency, they simply haven’t been up to the task.”
In Georgia alone, Recovery.gov is reporting millions in stimulus funds for the 00, 14th, 19th, 21st, 25th, 27th, and 86th Congressional Districts. The problem is those districts do not exist. At least until the census is completed, Georgia only has 13 Congressional Districts.
“As Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight, I have called for more transparency during several hearings. However, in the case of the non-stimulus bill, the President is failing to fulfill his promises to keep unemployment down and track every, single dime,” said Broun. “I hope the Administration will fix this website soon and clear up the cloud of confusion surrounding its big spending. I also sincerely hope that we do not learn that some of these figures were pulled out of thin air.”
Not only were funds reportedly awarded to nonexistent districts, but, according to Recovery.gov, over $20 million in taxpayer funds could not create or save one, single job in certain parts of cities, including Athens, Augusta, Eatonton, Lincolnton, Washington, and Evans.
